The plastic island never existed. It's worse
Have you ever heard about a plastic island, twice the size of France, floating in the Pacific Ocean? Despite news about it, that island never really existed.
What does exist, is a soup of plastics floating around accumulating in the North Pacific Gyre. Here I talk about how this North Pacific garbage patch poses additional issues compared to if it were an actual island.

How are the deep sea and extraterrestrial life linked?

Why do we study the deep sea, especially hydrothermal vents, to look for extraterrestrial life? How are these two things linked? How are hydrothermal vents related to life on planets like Enceladus and Mars? In this video we discuss astrobiology, especially, how studying the origin of life on Earth and looking for life on other planets are linked. Our search for aliens continues... My clothes s...

    I sailed the Clipper Route from Mexico to Portland Oregon in 2018. I crossed the garbage patch from south to north approximately 600 miles west of California. It was three days of flat smooth water with no wind. The water was filled with uncountable pieces of plastic, mostly less than two centimeters across with many larger pieces of plastic rope, fishing debris, a plastic wheelborrow, and one larger floating structure which I passed at about 1000 feet which appeared to be a trailer with two wheels. It was three days of motoring through a Dead Sea. No observable life except for the green turtles about a mile apart which were not entangled so I let them be. That three days were the most depressing place in nature I have ever experienced! She is absolutely accurate in her description.

    You DO have the options of independent research in your discipline, for contractors, from any governmental level to NPOs, NGOs, and even corporate entities. A few biologists manage to pursue initially self-funded research. as microbiology lab can be quite small endeavors. Bacteria and a few other organisms degrade hydrocarbons, and experimental development of more efficient such detritus feeders does not at all necessarily depend upon large labs. I realize that females of the species in question - us - ARE more anxious about maintenance of social-status, read $$$, than are the male independents i know. What you might consider navigating is that deep phenotypic female human conservatism on social status. Going against culturally learned and worse, very likely evolutionarily pressures occurring in your XX neural architecture, to become ( or rather, reinterpret one's arousal. PoV of one trained in Ev, bio, neuropsych) truly independent, is surely a greater difficulty than a male can know. Yet, one can cite many rara avis female scientists, intellectuals, and in fact, ANY human endeavor, who have ventured outside chart confines, and thus changed, the course of humanity itself.

    I find it hilarious and absurd. How so many people are quick to point fingers at Asian countries when the majority of the plastics in the world are manufactured and sourced from the United States and Europe. Denial is an incredibly deep and wide river in the United States.

    I don't believe that megladon is extent but some of the reasons given are kinda shit and seem pretty illogical primae facie. We would have seen one or a body. Yeah like the wollemi pine that was sitting immobile on land in more or less plain view, or the coalacenth. Or all those species that we know nothing about that turn up every now and then in African or Asian fish markets, or African meat markets. Not enough food. Huh. There's enough food for sperm whales, and killer whales, but there would not be enough food for a shark of about the same size. Maybe even killer whales or sperm whales. Right. Yeah there are no extent "extinct" species that we have missed before. And then there are the other phenomena that don't exist because some white person with letters behind their name has not seen them. Like rogue waves... Or let's get crazy UAP. Science needs to stop saying there s no evidence for stuff until they have looked for evidence... GTFO.

    Big companies are to blame. Here's why: Before I had the common brick of milk. Now big company decided to add a plastic lid that I didn't need. Extra plastic unnecessarily added. Before I bought for years honey in glass jar. Now the big company decided the jar is going to be made of plastic. More unnecessary plastic added. And I could go on. However, they focused in blaming consumers, who can't do anything because they have to buy food to eat. The real problem is never addressed.

    Unfortunately, the exaggerated hype/false claims around the plastic island and things like it, once people discover they’re not true, has dramatically harmed the perceived credibility of all of climate science. Scientists and especially journalists need to be more careful about the kinds of claims that they make so that this won’t keep happening and people can continue to have faith in science.

    Really liked the new style! Hope to see more new videos soon! Also, to add to the discussion, a lot of the plastics comes from fishing activities. I was born and raised next to a fishing community, and the amount of plastics they use is incredible. Everything from the nets, floaters and tools are plastic. All of these by nature, are perfect for microplastic generation, as the thickness of the fibers of the nets are close to the size range of microplastics, floaters are made of styrofoam balls that break appart by minimal physical stress, and salt and extreme UV radiation typical of the ocean surface will make plastics brittle fast.

    ... yet the whole world is obsessed about CO2 "pollution" while the real, dangerous pollution of ocean with plastic is neglected. Spend 10% of what's invested in green tech on developing packaging materials that would harmlessly biodegrade. Spend another 10% on introducing island nations to material recycling. Spend another 1% on developing a bacteria that feeds on micro- and nano-plastics.

Why don't all animals die in cities, where plastic is abundant... and not a single bird dies of plastic. This doesn't at all explain why you would leave academia. You do your post doc and then presumably you move on to a tenure track position where you have permanent job security at a decent salary rate for the rest of your academic life. Why would you give that up? For a completely insecure position as a science communicator? I don't get that at all. You haven't really addressed that question.

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria 5 дней назад

      It's really difficult to get a permanent position, it's 1000 dogs to one bone. Especially if you don't want to move. If you are willing to move around the world following the positions, it's easier. But even then... I know people in their 50s who have been living out of three-year grants their entire lives still in the hopes that one day they will manage to get a permanent position. So job security is definitely not a given in academia, and is in fact pretty hard to get. In any case, that was not the reason why I chose to change paths anyway, so I didn't elaborate on that aspect.

    • @user-gi3ys4de2l
      @user-gi3ys4de2l 5 дней назад

      @@Seamemaria of course. I get that. It would be interesting to talk about academia has changed and how faculty are being exploited while administrators make tons of money and make colleges and universities top heavy. As for moving, my parents were living in Switzerland when they got a telegram offering my father a position in the Math Department at the University of Alberta in Canada. Needless to say they got on the first available boat to Canada and the rest is history. Moving is not that big a deal.
